No Easy Answers
Published in Paperback by Moody Publishers (April, 1990)
Author: William Lane Craig
Average review score:

Good simple book dealing with pain and suffering
This is by far Craig's most basic book. It was geared to lay people who are possibly suffering or at least asking questions such as, "Why is there suffering and pain?"

Not only does Craig cover the issues and questions surrounding suffering, but he discusses doubt in the life of a believer. He uses certain Scripture references to explain why doubt, while not necessarily a good thing, is not always a bad thing if we hand it over to God (Mark 9:24).

In the chapter titled "Failure," Craig tells the story of his second doctorate, under Pannenberg, where he initially failed his oral examination. The story itself is a very humbling story and actually encouraging in many ways. It is encouraging in the sense that here is a man (Dr. Craig) who is a great thinker in the area of Christian philosophy and apologetics, and yet he too has been confronted with failure. Which demonstrates that failure can happen to anyone, it is how we handle the trials of failure which make the difference in our Christian walk.

This is a nice change of pace from Craig's other more technical and scholarly works. The book itself is fairly easy to find in the used market, so Amazon should not have trouble tracking it down for you. It is well worth the search.

On Hope
Published in Paperback by Ignatius Press (September, 1986)
Authors: Josef Pieper, Victoria H. Lane, and Mary F. McCarthy
Average review score:

Wrestles With the Questions That Count
German Catholic philosopher Josef Pieper (1904-1997) discusses with clarity and erudition the issue that grips all of us: what is the basis of our hope on the pilgrimage we call life? He points out that our status is that of people "on the way" who can easily fall into a meaningless existence. He calls us to high virtue. His description of the greatness of spirit of the Christian-- of Christian magnanimity--captures the exciting challenge of going on the pilgrimage of life as a Christian. He points out in this small book how essential hope, as opposed to despair or presumption, is to the Christian life. This book will challenge you to examine the status of your own pilgrimage.

The Osteoporosis Book
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (October, 1998)
Author: Nancy E. Lane
Average review score:

much needed info for EVERYONE on osteoporosis; well done!
This book covers info for all stages of life and types of persons (including men!) The section on risks is great, and the best chapter explains how Osteoporosis is diagnosed -- bone density scans are at last described in a meaningful way along with their interpretation. I found this very useful. There is a big and appropriate focus on prevention & treatment (great info here!) as well as cases presented that make each chapter come alive with real clinical descriptions and solutions. The book is incredibly well written, indexed superbly and contains numerous references. I can't say enough good things about this very informative and well done book!

Park Lane South, Queens
Published in Hardcover by St. Martin's Press (February, 1990)
Author: Mary Anne Kelly
Average review score:

Good mystery, great setting!
Discovering this book was a real find! As an avid mystery reader, I am discriminating about giving 5 stars--but I had no hesitation with this well-crafted novel. Solving the murders is, of course, the glue that holds this book together...but it is the interplay between the three sisters who have returned home to share memories, lovers, children and parents that makes this a reading experience that is compelling and worthwhile, and far more than just entertainment. The book is well written, too: good description, nice characterization--an all around enjoyable mystery novel, and one of the freshest and appealing stories I've read in a long time.
